The basic pocket spring mattress is made up of a steel spring unit which provides support and a layer of fillings which provide the comfort feel and are held together by a fabric cover.
The steel spring unit .Pocket spring mattresses are rated by counting the number of individual springs contained in the base unit in a king size (5’0”) mattress. Each individual spring is held in a fabric pocket. These are interconnected to create the spring unit.
The more pocket springs in a mattress means the springs get smaller and thinner offering more individual support and distribution of your bodyweight.
Firmness: This is controlled by the number of springs in the base and also by the wire diameter of the individual springs.
Fillings: These provide the comfort layer on top of the spring unit. The thickness and quality of the filling layer will determine the comfort and resilience of the mattress and of course the cost.
Mattress construction.
The construction is largely unseen to the untrained eye but is absolutely critical to the longevity of the mattress and its ability to retain its comfort over many years. It is also an considerable factor in the cost of the manufacture.
Side stitching: The mattress cover will hold the pocket spring mattress together. The sides of the mattress hold the springs in position. For cheaper mattresses the border can be reinforced by machine stitching. In time this may lead to bulging of the mattress sides. A superior solution is hand-side stitching, a labour intensive process which involves directly attaching by sewing the side panels to the perimeter rows of pocket springs. This gives complete and absolute edge to edge support and prevents the side panels from bulging out.
Tufting: To keep the spring unit and layer of filling in position, the top and bottom of the cover are hand sewn together by hand through the springs in an operation known as hand tufting. This process of tufting help to ensure the longevity of the mattress.
Ventilators: The mattress border is fitted with ventilators to. This enables the mattress to breathe and air.
